Fifty years ago, there were no wild turkeys in Montana. Today, estimates of the state's turkey population range approach 150,000. Nearly all Montana wild turkeys are of the Merriam's subspecies, named after C. Hart Merriam, one of the original founders of the National Geographic Society and first chief of the U.S. Biological Survey. The Merriam’s turkey represents one of the most successful wildlife introductions and is one of Montana's most prized upland game birds.

Montana has both a spring season and a fall season for wild turkeys. Hunters are required to purchase a turkey tag in addition to a bird and conservation license. Hunters are allowed one wild turkey per special tag holder per special season.
We hunt for wild turkeys on private ranch land, generally open ponderosa pine woodlands in rugged terrain. Although rifles are legal, turkeys usually taken with a shotgun (not larger than a ten gauge) or a long, recurve or compound bow and arrow.
Adult male Merriam's turkeys average 48 inches in length and about 16 pounds, while adult females average 34 inches in length and about 9 pounds.
