The mountain lion, also known as the cougar, will eat any animal it can catch, feeding most often on deer and elk. Aside from humans, no species preys upon the mature mountain lion the wild. This makes cat hunting both challenging and hair raising—an adventure you will not soon forget.
We hunt for mountain lion in Hunting Unit 560. Since cats are most active at dawn and dusk, we start before daylight, traveling snowy mountain roads in search of the distinctive tracks of a cat. We use 4-wheel drive vehicles, snowmobiles, horses, and dogs to track a trophy.
Average cats on our hunts have been over 8 feet and 140 pounds. Several of our archers have shot lions that have been recorded by Pope and Young, a nonprofit bowhunting organization that maintains the universally-accepted scoring system and sets the standards for measuring and scoring North American big game. One particular Pope and Young lion weighed 182 pounds and had a skull that measured 14 7/8".
This hunt, led by an experienced pack of lion hounds that will absolutely not quit a lion track, has been highly successful over the last few years.
On this hunt, we promise to tree a legal cat for you to shoot. It is a 7-day hunt. If we do not tree a legal cat in 7 days, you can either stay hunting or come back later in the season to get your cat.
