The elk is one of the largest mammals in North America, weighing in at more than twice a much as a mule deer. Only bull elk bear antlers, yet the number of tines has little to do with the age or maturity of a particular animal.
Even so, a bull elk makes an impressive trophy... and both bulls and cows make for some mighty fine meals!
Most of our hunting is done in Area 560; we focus on the Boulder drainage and use spot-and-stalk techniques. We hunt on both public and private land, including the West Boulder backcountry. Much of the West Boulder area burned in 2006, so the new vegetation has increased the number of deer and elk in the area. The burn area offers great visibility and a fine opportunity to spot and watch game, allowing us to better learn their patterns.
Over the years, we have averaged 4- and 5-point bulls, with some of the larger 6-point bulls scoring in the 330 class. We average a 50% kill, with some years as high as 85%. Remember, this does not include turned-down or missed opportunities.
This high-country hunt offers a chance to hunt elk during the rut. Thrilling and dramatic, archery hunts allow a closeup look at big game animals, often bugled in to less than 50 yards away. The daunting mass of an elk this close will challenge your nerves and test your archery skills.
This fully guided ranch or high-country hunt uses 4-wheel-drive vehicles or horses. High-country hunts on horseback may span multiple days with overnights in one of our camps.
