Montana black bear hunts take place in both spring and fall. Licenses must be purchased prior to opening day. A license purchased after the spring deadline is valid only in the fall season.
We book most of our bear hunts in the first 10 days of May. These post-hibernation dates offer the highest success rate as hungry bears scavenge for soft green plants on the south-facing mountain slopes. Our area of the state offers a nice variety of colored bear—plenty of reds and chocolates, with an occasional blonde.
Grizzly bears cannot be legally hunted in Montana. A hunter must pass a black bear identification test to obtain a license.
We hunt black bear on both public and private land, seeking high vantage points via horseback or 4-wheel drive or on foot. We do a lot of glassing and spotting for bear, surrounded by spectacular scenery. Be sure to bring your camera.
Spring bears average about 200 pounds.

While there is a black bear hunting season in the fall, we do not offer outfitting services associated with this hunt.
